My parents aren’t in my life.
Some of you may already know this because we’re bloggy friends, or because you read my post on elopement, but my parents are not in my life by their own choice.
I am so grateful to have wonderful in-laws, but as much as I would like for my in-laws to fill the void that my parents left, they just can’t.
That void that was especially evident when we found out we were pregnant with out daughter. I would have loved to be able to call my mom during my pregnancy to ask her questions, use her as a sounding board, and to share excitement with her.
But rather than focus on my disappointment, I decided to lean on the next best source: the What to Expect® Series.
I chose What to Expect® When You’re Expecting to answer all of my pregnancy questions not just because it is the longest running book on The New York Times Bestseller list (600 weeks!), but because I remember it having a place on my mother’s nightstand throughout all of her pregnancies, and I knew that if she trusted it, then I could too!
Packed with common-sense answers to every single questions you could ever have about pregnancy, The First Year, and The Second Year, the What to Expect® books have had a place on my nightstand since that first pregnancy test to the next 6 that I stared at in disbelief. From questions like “Are my contractions for real?” to weirder ones like “When Will I Lose My Mucous Plug?” I never had a question that couldn’t be answered by What to Expect® When You’re Expecting.
Even after out daughter was born, What To Expect was there for me, with What to Expect® the First Year. I think most new moms have a tendency to be hyper-protective and to freak out over everything – and let me tell you, I was certainly one of them! I read What to Expect® the First Year cover to cover at least twice before our precious girl turned 1, so imagine my excitement when I realized that there is a What to Expect® the Second Year too!
We’re 20 months into this parenting thing, and the What to Expect® series is all lined up on my nightstand. I’ve already read What to Expect® the Second Year once, and I’m working my way through it again.
Right now, we’re in the throes of potty training, and while it’s not easy, I know that these books have my back. From how to encourage her when she has accidents and keep the potty training experience positive, to how to transition her to big-girl underpants, we still haven’t had a question go unanswered.
Although my story is unique, I can say with confidence that we’re raising a happy, healthy child, because of the guideance we’ve been given by What to Expect®

The book What to Expect When Expecting was a life saver for me. I was so clueless and this book gave me the information that I needed to keep my mind in peace during the pregnancy. I highly recommend this book!
